Big Sur never fails to impress.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what an amazing drive it is. Must be incredible on a motorbike. So many fantastic views, hidden coves and sweeping curves. We stopped to look at some Elephant seals basking in the sun on one of the many beaches along the way. Then, after a long drive, decided to grab some lunch at the WhaleWatcher Cafe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now I\u2019m used to outlandish promises made by eateries and theme towns here, \u2018see the worlds largest ball of string\u2019 or \u2018look down the worlds deepest well\u2019, they usually fail miserably to impress, hideously contrived. But within a few seconds of sitting down I spotted a whale fluke, then another and another, until we had seen perhaps ten before the starter even arrived. Impressive! One actually breached a few times, obviously a juvenile having some fun. Dani was happy, wanted to take one home as usual, but seeing as our home is a car, that could be a little difficult. Lots of sloshing and soaking and fishy breath. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We arrived in Carmel in the early evening. Some of my family happened to be visiting there with relatives, so we gatecrashed for the evening. It was such a lovely reunion. Catching up with my uncle and aunt and their family. And what a house! All glass overlooking a beautiful view of a small canyon. It gave me inspiration and ideas for what to build in Costa Rica. We even saw a bobcat which is pretty rare. Followed by the inevitable \u2018can we take it home? You don\u2019t want me to be happy\u2019 from Dani. Mental note, find her a kitten in Costa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

California is beautiful. Every sight a postcard, every turn a revelation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I read recently a piece by Louis Theroux about America and how it feels like it has less gravity somehow. So much space and room to breathe and freedom to be who you want to be leaving you feeling lighter. And it\u2019s true. So true.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
